For those who have not yet heard: XRX, which used to publish knitting books and a magazine while running Stitches events, then pulled back to just running Stitches events with all those classes for fiber artists and vendors on the floor and thousands of participants, was done in by the effects of the pandemic and as of today is formally out of business.

It is unfathomable that after 30 years of going to Stitches West and, once, Stitches East, there will not be another one. Not just the yarns and booths but all the friends I only get to see there, now how will we ever? Such a loss. And all that knowledge begging to be shared.

I thought their moving Stitches West from the Bay Area to Sacramento was a mistake–it was their biggest event–but this was absolutely not an opinion I wanted to be vindicated on.

Surely someone out there will take the sudden business opening and run with it.

So sad. I agree moving Stitches West out of the Bay Area was probably not helpful, but their choices might have been limited. I was going to go, but life intervened. The marketplace was tiny compared to before times, so I wondered how many folks would go just for that.
There’s not anyone really waiting in the wings to take the spot unless Vogue Knitting moves from LA.

It’s a pity they are gone. Such friendly people, and so supportive of the indie dyers and small businesses.

I vaguely recall there were issues with the unions and others that made Santa Clara difficult for them. In the end, I think it was cost and lack of space/available rooms – both for guests and teaching – that caused the move.

I hope there will be some sort of archived vendor list, so people can continue to support their favorite businesses.

So sudden! From the outside, anyway. Hopefully something will arise to fill the gap.

Oh rats! The Sacramento Convention Center is closer to me than Santa Clara, but I had out of state commitments the last 2 years and never visited Stitches West at the new location. So hope another group can pick it up in some fashion. It was the place we finally met many years ago.
