Marnie’s Scarf

How do you thank one of life’s great friends? Marnie, along with a few others, helped keep my house and kids together while I was recovering from a critical illness in July ’03. When I felt too weak, right after getting out of the hospital, to wash my own hair, she came over and washed my hair. Such a simple act, such a powerful message of caring. She’s allergic to wool? Not a problem, I preferred using cashmere on her anyway. We did the cheek test first: here, does this itch? It did not.

Alright! Cast on!

I used cashmere navy laceweight yarn and size 4 (3.5mm) needles. Noble rosewood needles from Holz and Stein, because they’re made from the leftover wood from making musical instruments, and Marnie and I are both musicians; nothing else would do. They dance so lightly in the hands.

This is the Rabbit Tracks pattern, along with just a bit of edging, used to border a traditional diamond pattern. My ball of yarn was two ounces, I’m guessing maybe 600 yards? I had a comfortable amount left over at the end.

Cast on 42 stitches.
