All in the family

The phone rang at the end of January.  My in-law said the tests were positive and yes, it had metastasized.

The phone rang three days later. Different in-law.  Yes, it was.

The new news came yesterday. Protesting that three’s a crowd does nobody any good and there is much we do not know yet; what we do know gives much room for hope.

Trying to process it all: I write, I knit.

And I looked up in the early afternoon while typing to Chan: on the roof of the shed, with the awning blocking my view, all I could see was the feet and the wing and tail tips that had just arrived. The dove on the patio freaked and ran straight up and towards it; those big feet and feathers turned leisurely to enjoy the pizza delivery.

I think less than an hour later, he settled in on the back of that chair I talked about yesterday and simply stood and looked me in the eyes. He wasn’t looking for prey.

It was a moment of sharing in all Creation.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

My thoughts flew upwards on his wings and a prayer.

Oh honey, I’m sorry. Waiting for word, myself, on the details of a cherished friend’s diagnosis and treatment plan. Your in-laws are already on a sticky-note on the bathroom mirror; I will add “and ??” to that list, because He knows, even if I don’t. Wish I could wrap my arms around you (or we could wrap our arms around each other) today, but know that you’ll be in my thoughts and prayers, and if you need to talk, your s-i-l has my number, and I will be at her house after work for a Primary teacher party if the news on my end is good. So thankful that you got the not-birdbrained reminder that Heaven is mindful of you, and yours.

Nature comes to the rescue again, and reminds us there is a plan.

Wind beneath my wings comes to mind too…

Breath. Knit. Pray. And know that you and yours are loved.

I cannot say any more than what has already been said, but you know my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Words seem hollow but know that you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.

In a different language, we see the same thing in creation. May it continue to bring you comfort and strength through the hard parts of being alive and joy and peace in the wondrous parts.

It is in the small things that we are reminded that creation is all around us. It is hard to see it when under duress, and it is the wise who know how to sit still and behold that beauty.
