The staph infection came roaring back on cue.
The antibiotics have begun.
The show shall go on. No delay.
The pharmacist said how to take the stuff four times a day while out cold was the surgeon’s problem.
But–no sitting up for two weeks post-op!? How am I supposed to do thank-you knitting afterwards? Plan ahead, I guess, and work hard.
The ruby yarn got swatched today–I was determined to play with it at least some to get it out of my system for now, and now I know better what I’ll be doing with it, what changes to make to adjust to gauge. Â To be knitted up the rest of the way in its own good time.
A small thud. A bird hit the window behind me but kept right on flying as I turned to see, veering away from the glass and out of danger, not feeling so great for the moment but thankfully okay.

Even with these “disturbances”, you are ever a poet.
Comment by karin maag-tanchak 07.28.09 @ 7:39 pmSending good thoughts.
You are, as always, in my heart.
You need a roaring staph like I need another hole in my head!
You know that we are all with you, and praying like crazy for a fast and full recovery.

How Do You Decide Who To Marry ? ( Written By Kids ) Too Funny ! ! !
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.
— Alan, age 10
No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with…
— Kristen, age 10
WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.
— Camille, age 10
HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.
— Derrick, age 8
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
Both don’t want any more kids.
— Lori, age 8
WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough…
— Lynnette, age 8 (isn’t she a treasure?)
On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.
— Martin, age 10 (isn’t he ready for the world of dating?)
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR?
I’d run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns.
— Craig, age 9
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
When they’re rich.
— Pam, age 7
The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.
— Curt, age 7
The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them… It’s the right thing to do.
— Howard, age 8
IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them.
— Anita, age 9 (bless you child)
HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there?
— Kelvin, age 8 (I like this kid)
And the #1 Favorite is …
HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck.
— Ricky, age 10 (He’ll be married forever)
Which day is your surgery? Prayers going for success in this and a rapid recovery.
Comment by sherry in idaho 07.28.09 @ 10:17 pmOh, dear Alison… How you deal with all the twists your body throws at you, with your usual grace, charm, and determination, is truly an inspiration. I am praying with you and for you, as ever.
Comment by Pegi 07.29.09 @ 4:39 amThank the Lord for meds and doctors and surgeries and prayers and friends and yarn and patterns and all good things that help with getting over the bumps in the road. 🙂
Comment by Toni Smoky-Mountains 07.29.09 @ 4:48 amI need to ask: do you remember the days when you had no health bumps on your road? Good grief! We need to send a letter to your system asking politely to cooperate in a calm and friendly manner.
I wish I could help you with the than-you scarves, honest.
But since that’s not in the cards, prayers and strong positive vibes will have to do.
Please take care of yourself as best you can!
Comment by Suzanne 07.29.09 @ 5:24 amKnitting ahead is good. Another plan-ahead might be loading some audio books (and good music) on an MP3 player. It would sure help with “observing the ceiling” time.
Antibiotics can be converted to IV administration in hospital. Not to worry!
Comment by Barbara-Kay 07.29.09 @ 5:50 amI believe someone needs to journey back to the bird store and ask about a window cling that will help your feathered friends realize that it is a glass wall. I’m not precisely sure what I’m talking about, but there are little bells jingling in the back of my mind…
Resting and healing well is all the thanks your providers really want, you know. I also am quite sure you’re shaking your head and telling me you need to do more, but I assure you they’ll be just as moved if it happens at your six-month follow up!
Comment by Channon 07.29.09 @ 6:08 amyou need a Kindle 2 – at least you could read while flat on your back – it saved my sanity this past winter — you can hold it in one hand and hit the turn page button with one finger –
Hang in there – you know thoughts and prayers going out for you 😉
Comment by rho 07.29.09 @ 7:00 amYou can knit in the reclining position! I’ve done it (multiple times).
Have you written any designs that incorporate birds?
Comment by Michelle 07.29.09 @ 7:22 amOK Alison, you need to concentrate on yourself and not thank you scarves. So, I am willing to knit a scarf for you (or two) if you will tell me the pattern you want (be specific) and the yarn, color and gauge. I will be glad to thank anyone who helps you get well…
Comment by Judy Foldi 07.29.09 @ 7:23 amOh I’m so sorry to hear that. You’ve inspired me to knit again, after many many years away from it, and for that I thank you and will keep reading here to see how you’re doing.
Comment by Candy 07.29.09 @ 7:45 amAs always, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Be like that bird.
Comment by Momo Fali 07.29.09 @ 8:27 amTwo weeks not sitting up for someone with such an active mind and busy knitting hands will probably feel like twice that. Hope it won’t be too many days before you can blog about the culinary tips on grilling lettuce.
BTW, stupid staph! Talk about rotten timing.
Comment by LynnM 07.29.09 @ 9:56 amAnother setback?! Now, that’s just no fun at all! Once when I was bedbound, I sensed something and looked toward the window and there was a hummingbird hovering there – appearing to be looking at me…really brightened my day! So, I hope your next window encounter is a hummingbird just hovering there – to brighten your day and wish you well!
Thinking of you and praying for you always,
Abby
Love and prayers sent your way Alison. Let there
be a speedy recovery. You are our inspiration !
Now, that’s just unfriendly. I’m thinking healing thoughts for you. And how about some martial bacteria-fighting music? (Did you know that this could be done on a guitar? Doug Smith plays “The Stars and Stripes Forever”– astonishing stuff.)
Comment by RobinH 07.29.09 @ 11:31 amI can’t make up my mind if you have no luck, or the best luck ever. either way, lots of people pulling for you, and lots of love.
Comment by Kristine 07.29.09 @ 11:51 amSorry about the staph infection. Sending my best wishes. It’s a beautiful leukocyte!
Comment by RobinM 07.29.09 @ 1:14 pmOh, Alison. Sorry to hear about the infection and need for upcoming surgery. Rest and get better my dear. Day by day…
Comment by Bev 07.29.09 @ 6:07 pmOh my gosh! I get behind a few days and you are headed back to the hosiptal. I will pray that is all goes well and that you will be up and about in no time.
