Fruit o’lanterns

So I was talking to my adult kids a few years ago during a rare get-together and Kid #1 told me with a grin, I always knew where your secret chocolate stash was, Mom.

Me, with requisite arched eyebrow: Oh you did?

Kid #2: Um hum. Sure did.

Kid #3: Nods.

Kid #4: (Look of total innocence. Or trying. But not really.)

I was reminded of that when I went out to pick a few more pomegranates; it’s getting late in the season and the biggest ones were more than ready. (Note that the tree blooms randomly from early spring well into the summer.) I’d already done a main harvest and shared them at church, but I’d like to give a few more to the neighbors who haven’t gotten one yet.

I only ever saw a squirrel braving the thorns once this year and ever since I’ve been sprinkling it every few days with cinnamon. They hate the smell, they hate touching the powder or getting it in their fur. Matter of fact I did that Saturday, and everything was fine.

But it does blow away so easily on the slightest wind.

Those big perfect beautiful fuschia balls of goodness…

Were facing the windows of the house.

On the other side, where I wouldn’t be able to see it?

Just missed their Halloween debut.
