Don’t call us we won’t call you

I’m reading the news from Baltimore, where my daughter lived two years ago, recognizing some of the local spots and dealing with the small stuff here as a way to cope.

Phone spammers. I know, this was supposed to stop with the Do Not Call registry but there seem to be more and more of these of late.

If they say, “Press 1 to be taken off our list,” do NOT press 1. If you do, you’ve engaged with them and they then claim they have a business relationship with you, ergo, they have permission to call. I usually simply leave the phone off the hook till they’re gone.

But when I actually heard a human rather than a recording a few days ago, I broke in to tell the guy flat out, “Why would I hire you when the only thing I know about you is you’re willing to break the law? Y’know, the Do Not Call…”

But he had hung up before I could finish that second sentence. Wait, wait, I wasn’t done with my spiel!

I don’t know why we bother to register for do not call list! I think telemarketers thought it up so they could have a wider list of victims!

Check out nomorobo.com to solve this issue. I learned about it from an article in the NY Times, signed up, and have been thrilled to find that it has successfully intercepted almost all rob calls.

Years ago, we lived where we had a pretty antiquated phone system. If someone called you, and you left the phone off the hook, they could not call anyone else until you hung up the phone. Guess how often my phone sat up in the cupboard.

You know, I used to be irate at the telemarketers until I realized they were paid only a very little to be berated all day. Now when I get a person instead of an auto call, I just say thank you, I’m not interested, and hang up. I’m not rude to them, because it is not that person’s fault. He/she is just trying to earn some bread and is not responsible for the whole (totally broken) system. And yeah, Canada has a do not call list too, and it doesn’t work either…

Track the phone number. If they call you again, report it to do not call. There is a fine for violating.

@Joanne: very good point, thank you. I needed that reminder.

I am with Joanne, except for calls that are clearly scams. The last time I got a 6 AM call from someone claiming to be ‘calling from Windows’, I was quite rude. I didn’t swear, I believe I said something like, ‘get lost, you lousy crooks!’
