Hip hip, hooray!

Made good progress on the Malabrigo I hadn’t expected to work on today, because I…

Took a good hard tumble this afternoon. Did a straight-forward splat on the carpet, bent my glasses, the item in my hands going flying ahead of me–

–and thought of my mom’s reaction.

My mother’s mother broke her hip when my mom was in college, and Mom, small-boned and thin, was always afraid of that happening to her. And so it was that one day, about 16 years ago, she was carrying one of my sister’s twin then-babies and found herself suddenly falling down the stairs she’d been heading down, her full focus on protecting that child from harm.

I can just picture him wanting to ask, Doozitagin? He was fine.

And Mom brushed herself off just jubilant: the baby was fine, and she hadn’t broken her hip! If it didn’t happen then it probably wasn’t ever going to–she was fine! Yay!

And at 81 now, she’s still fine.

I yelled for my Richard. He came.

My 6’8″ husband is incredibly tall when you’re looking up at him from the floor. He helped me up, I brushed myself off, whined a bit–sorry, Mom–and my balance seemed a little worse for the jolt. But hey.

Michelle told me, Mom, you need to sit down, put your feet up and KNIT!

Well, when you put it that way…

Oh no! Glad to hear no broken bones. Pride can heal quicker anyway. Stay safe!

Oh! Ow! Thank goodness you were on carpet, and so happy you didn’t break anything. Michelle is a very smart daughter. Knit away!

Thank goodness you’re fine. I hope you’re not too sore this morning – both hands from knitting and the rest of you from your tumble?

That is scary. Every time I fall, I break something so I am super-grateful that you didn’t. Michelle is wise.

Good choice of surface on which to fall, and good advice from M. I wonder if a broken hip has the horrible prognosis it did when we were kids, but I’m very glad we don’t have to learn about that vicariously through you!

I am never sure who is more blessed – you or your children. I can only hope that my daughter will care for me as much as your children do for you…and vice versa!

We have a similar stair story that involved my mother, newborn brother and myself. Groggy, sleepless mama with a long nightgown; early rising fussy sensory challenged boy; quiet older sister that was already downstairs trying not to awake a sleeping soul. I remember vividly my mother tumbling down those stairs. I remember thinking she was a doughnut, and baby Adam in the center as she went round and round as I watched through the rails. They reached the bottom my mother unfurling like a fern and Adam rolling along her long legs like a log to rest on the landing…face up…still. The earth stopped for an eternity. Then the scream of fury that said howdareyoumakemymorningworsethanitwaswhodoitalktogetmeupoffthelandingforgoodness sakes scream that made us girls breathe will relief. We all joke that that was the moment Adam decided to forge his own path…surely we were not going to be helpful on this journey.

I hope that you are not even bruised, as I am sure that indicates bigger obstacles than others.

sheesh. Ya gotta be careful! You could have broken a hip! 🙂 Seriously, though, younger women tend to break wrists from trying to break their fall. Just think, then you’d be laid up and UNABLE TO KNIT. WOE, woe I say!
