Well, if you can’t fix the huge thing, at least not yet, fix the little things.
And so I’ve pushed myself past the will-this-work of a project idea and am into the oh, this does work, this is so cool! stage.
That and the house got cleaner today. Sometimes a vigorous tossing out helps with the stuff you can’t get rid of.
I hear space heaters are safer than they used to be… I also remember the day I was picking up my kids (there are no school buses here) when the firefighters at the station down the block from the elementary didn’t notice till the kids knocked on their door at dismissal time to tell them the house immediately across the street from the station was definitely on fire. Yo?
A space heater had been left on.
So if we do get any, automatic shut-offs are an absolute. This is earthquake country.
(And all this time I’d thought the lack of sufficient heat was because PG&E had cut pressure to Line 132, the one that blew up in San Bruno and which runs very close to our house.)

we use a small space heater in our family room in the evenings to keep it a bit warmer — helps the achy joints so I can keep working on projects!
the one we have is a long, low baseboard style model that won’t tip over easily and it has both a thermostat and a timer function
we’ve been using it for several years — the second year we’d had it I took it out of the storage shed and it wouldn’t work — because it had a warranty and I’d kept the paperwork I was able to contact them and it was replaced for us — FREE — including the shipping — and we’ve had no more issues since —
choose carefully and be safe!

Check and it will be okay. The low ones are not so easily tipped and warms the room a bit more than a stand up.

The coldest winter I ever spent was not in Michigan, but Woodland, CA not far north of you.
The temps were not bad, but the damp made it feel tons worse than 20 degrees in the snow.
Oh my, being cold is worse than being too warm IMO That said DH bought me one of those oil filled tall radiator look-a-like heaters several years ago and it is wonderful. It takes a while to heat up but once it does radiates heat wonderfully. Our volunteer fire chief even told him that we can leave it set on the lowest setting if we leave the house for a short while to keep the oil warm because they are just so very safe! If something happened to it today I would replace it ASAP! Not very expensive either which was a real plus.
