Overdose of catknit

Tiny yarn, small needles, a large stitch count, and after all the knitting I did today, (which, granted, given the season and the children home, wasn’t what it might have been) it is measuring officially one inch shorter than this morning.

Sometimes, knitting acts like a cat.

A squirtgun effect will make it behave.  I will go rinse it and set it out still on the needles to dry, a quasi-block.  Let’s see if we can get Socks here to stretch its paws a bit.

p.s.  For those who’ve known the Provo Tabernacle and haven’t heard yet.  I have fond memories from college of the incredible acoustics in that building: of being in the upper balcony facing the front and my neighbor’s adorable little elf of a four-year-old being so ready to be done with sitting quietly up there. (There was no air conditioning. Lots of people. Heat rises.)  She leaped to her feet in the middle of the meeting after one early speaker said the magic word Amen, exclaiming in a voice that carried around the entire interior, “We go now Daddy?!”

And now the building has left the elves.

I don’t remember how old Nathan was, but one Sunday he was fidgeting during the sermon. Howard said “Amen” and Nathan stood up, flung out his arms and yelled, “He’s done!” Thanks kid!

My best memory is of walking up the stairs to the choir loft at 6:00 on a Saturday morning for stake choir practice, Firstborn (brand-new) in my arms, as the organist played the opening bars of “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor”.

It’s a sad day when a beautiful building dies in a fire. I hope they can rebuild using some material from the shell that is left. I had my son , he was about 3 , coming bursting into service, we were a tiny, congregation, and yell “Mommy, Darrell spanked me”. Seems one little man, my son was being a little terror in the nursery, (The men decided that they would do nursery that day) and My son, thought Darrell was a push over. So he received a swat on the bottom and told to sit down and play quietly. He turns 30 on Monday, and sits quietly in church now.

We drove by that building late Friday night and marveled at its beauty–then about the time we arrived home, it was in flames. Very sad when such a beautiful and historical building is lost.

Out of the mouths of babes …

So sorry to hear about the fire.

When we were in a little tiny shul, the president called the kids up to hear a bible story. All the children consisted of two – Judith and Rebekah. So they go up and lean on each side of “Uncle Jerry.” Away he goes and starts to tell the story. The girls stop him and say “that’s NOT the way it goes!” and proceeded to rattle off (each finishing off the other ones sentences as only small twin girls can do) a very short and concise version of the spider web that covered the cave and protected the Maccabees from the enemy soldiers. Jerry sat their with his mouth open and sputtered “how did you know that???” To which they pipe up together “One Minute Jewish Bedtime Stories!” I was outed.

How sad that such a beautiful place has been so badly damaged! I’m lovin’ all the memories your friends have been sharing here. 🙂

Fire is merciless, but there’s something extra-upsetting about a fire at a church. However, in the spirit of childhood stories…

How ’bout the time I’d walked next door to the parrish hall to go potty and came back with no fewer than about 18″ of toilet paper stuck to my shoe.

We sat near the front. Hem. I was just old enough to walk next door by myself, so it was funny, not humiliating.

Ah, the loss of the building is sad, but my mind immediately goes to the loss of the contents as even sadder. What artwork, textiles, sculpture, documents…

I hope your squirt gun works better on your project than mine has on the kiddens. They have become incredibly rascally in recent days.
