Talk about kar-ma

For the first time in a long time, I got to the South Bay Knitters group tonight; we did the usual talking about our knitting and showing off and chatting…

…Sometimes, when you need a chance to laugh, one that comes with a serious oh-my-goodness wince will do.

Somehow the subject got onto stolen cars.  To my surprise, several people there had tales to tell.

And then one woman told her son’s story and totally took the prize.

Now, anybody who lived in this area during the Loma Prieta quake in ’89 remembers where they were, and the news stories and places have their own instantly-recognized buzzwords in the local culture.

Her son had gone with a few friends to watch the World Series–the one my dad was watching on TV, when all the sudden the camera did this weird shaky-shake as the announcer exclaimed, “Hey!  I think we’re having an earth!–” and the screen went blank.

Her son and friends were there at Candlestick Park, looking around to see if that was just the crowd somehow being that raucous in the stands? But no.  The place was ordered evacuated; there was no way to know how damaged the stadium might be, and no way no how were the teams going to continue playing baseball that night.

So they went to go pile in the Jeep and go home.

Only, it wasn’t there.

They called the cops and apologized, going, “I know, right now of all times, you have more important things you’re worrying about, but…”

Her kid got a call back some weeks later.  They’d found the car!

“But I don’t think you want it back.”

An intrigued, puzzled, “Where did you find it?”

“On the Cypress Structure.”

So, does that mean instant retribution for the thief? The discussions with the insurance company must have been interesting…how to categorize the loss. No argument about whether or not it was totaled!

Yup, that thief made a bad decision that day. No, two. Barbara-Kay, what an interesting point!

When I was about 7, my parents’ car was stolen. It was recovered a couple of days later in a remote wooded area of McLean. It had one wheel off, but the police caught the kids before they stripped it any further, and we got our car back. However, that remote wooded area is now known as Tysons II, or the Tysons Galleria, home to Neiman Marcus and many other stores I won’t even enter, much less actually shop at. So much for the woods.

and that little car thief? If he survived I’m thinking he never did it again

I’m assuming that the cops found the Jeep on the lower deck of the Cypress. Instant pancake.

I think I mentioned this in one of my posts, but when the quake hit, I was in my bathroom, so I just sat down on the floor. When it was over, I found myself in front of the glass shower doors! No, they didn’t break!

This topic NEEDS some humor —

The injury to the piglet wasn’t serious, but it did need stitches. So the farmer sent his teenage daughter back into the farmhouse to get a needle and thread. When she hadn’t returned after 10 minutes, he hollered, “What are you doing?” She yelled back, “Looking for the pink thread.”

Priceless.

I wonder what great good that thief has now created in the world. I mean, if my stealing a car caused an earthquake, I sure would change my ways bigtime!

Oh. My. Ouch. My FIL worked at the Oakland main PO and came home by way of The Cypress freeway. It was a long 3 hours that day (before cell phones) until we learned he’d left work early and had got off the freeway in Emeryville to visit family.

In answer to Tola, my assumption is if it took that long to get to where the car was, I’m afraid it must have been well buried under that freeway section.
