imgp7540Our friends Glenn and Johnna bought a new house and invited a few friends over to see it last night. One fellow there whom I didn’t know looked at my gray hair and commented that he was right behind me. I told him, yeah, but I’ve already got the hearing aids and the cane–beat you!

What I didn’t know, is, he was Glenn’s friend from New York City who happened to study composition under Thelonius Monk. Joel Forrester, whose tune is the theme song for NPR’s Fresh Air, sat down at Glenn’s piano and launched into a performance on the spot for everybody.  Absolutely incredible.

Now, it was Sunday, and my family and I live by very old-fashioned ideas about not working and trying to live in such a way that we don’t make other people work on Sunday if we can possibly help it.  (Or for others, to honor whatever day they choose to celebrate their own Sabbath if we can.)  Which is why I told Joel I wanted to go to Amazon when it wasn’t Sunday anymore and buy all his CDs.

imgp7544He promptly handed me three along with his card, adding his autograph when I asked, and told me he lived by the honor system and to send him a check whenever the day felt right to me.

He will find that it was postmarked today.  And I happily have new music to jazz up my knitting time.

Cool! Autographed by the “author”! Fair play for being such a good soul and signing your book until your hand hurt! *grin*

Holy cow! When things go right for you, they really do! Congrats.

Before I get to the humor, a disappointing note: No post on my blog today — technical difficulties.

Okay, fun time:
HOW TO SPEAK ABOUT MEN AND BE  POLITICALLY CORRECT:

1.  He does not have a ‘BEER GUT’…He has developed a ‘LIQUID GRAIN STORAGE FACILITY.’

2.  He is not a ‘BAD DANCER’ – He is ‘  OVERLY CAUCASIAN.’

3.  He does not ‘GET LOST ALL THE TIME’ – He ‘INVESTIGATES ALTERNATIVE DESTINATIONS.’

4.  He is not ‘BALDING’ – He is in ‘FOLLICLE  REGRESSION.’

Back when you were so sick and thinking of things you would get to do when you got better, I bet “enjoy an impromptu performance by Joel Forrester” never even occurred to you! What a sweet surprise!

I guess life decided some extra celebrations were in store for you, huh? I’m glad you were able to experience such a wonderful day!

And thank you for showing him (and the rest of the world now) that yes, there is still such a thing as an honour system. It’s sad that too many of us have been burnt by it to trust it anymore, though… or had a close brush and were scared that plans made would not materialize because somebody wouldn’t keep their word.

How well does his music match with knitting? *wink*

Good morning,
I tried using your e-mail but kept getting a message, from my server, that it was not formatted correctly, so, I’m writing to the most current blog entry – about the Strawberry Pie Shawl.
I am working on the pie shawl in DIC Smooshy.
I’m starting the set with 5 berries and it measures about 13″ inches between the 4th & 5th wedge. It could be longer but I’d rather not take the 400+ stitches off the needle.
For a point of reference, I would appreciate knowing about how long the back of the shawl (in the picture) measures, esp., before the edge pattern.
Until later, Margaret

You know that pottery I bought on Sunday? I hadn’t brought my checkbook, and when I asked if they took credit they explained their “in-house credit system”–mail a check for the total. She said nobody has ever not mailed the check, and that people who like pottery are good people. I mailed the check the next day, of course, with a note thanking them for their part in my kids’ enjoyment of the fair.

The good people far outweigh the bad. The good are just quieter about it, I think.

Ooh, how fabulous! I love that theme song, too — I bet those cds make for great knitting music 🙂

Awesome. I’m a huge Miles Davis fan, so hearing he worked with the Monk gives me chills. I’ll have to look into his stuff. Let me know how it is, I imagine, awesome!

I refuse to shop on a statutory holiday. I don’t want to work em, so I am not going to make someone else work it!
