placid Potomac, above the FallsThis is a fairly placid section of the river, above the Great Falls area of the Potomac. It’s looking across not at Virginia, but at an island midriver.

Below is another picture of the rushing waters at Great Falls, downriver–I shot the same spot, looking upriver, for the previous post. I didn’t make it all the way across the bridgeway to the overlook viewing the main part of the Potomac here: the ground below gave way to a rising wooden planked area, changing both the direction and the height under our feet, and it threw my sense of balance so badly I was afraid my camera was going to end up in the falls. But this is one of the narrow chutes of water through the rocks that George Washington wanted a way safely around. Great Falls area

Something tells me you haven’t hiked the “Billy Goat Trail” anytime recently. I never encountered it as a kid, but after we moved back, my sister told us about it and took me and the girls there. It was fun, but much of it was as rough as it sounds, and I was really glad when we finished and got back to that nice level towpath!! Also, I don’t think I ever told you that Matthew and his scout troop biked the entire distance a couple of summers ago. It took them three days. Matt was hardly the fastest of the bikers, but due to sheer dumb luck, he was the first to locate the terminal marker in Georgetown and hence “finish.”

Not since I was a kid. But it was great fun.

I climbed up on a good tall rock at the beach at Pacific Grove a few years ago, bad balance and all, and my visiting sister-in-law became an instant hero by grabbing me hard and saving me as I started to fall overboard. Lesson learned. Some things I just need a brain transplant before I try again. But I can enjoy other people enjoying doing the climbing–or bicycling. He did the whole canal in three days? Wow.

it looks to me like you have plenty of natural inspiration for your creative pursuits. You are so very lucky to have access to this beauty!!!! Up here in Saskatchewan we have plenty of natural wonders to explore and enjoy too but I rarely get to them anymore.

Wow, Laura. Three days?? It always took us a good week. But then we weren’t really going at a boy scout’s pace. Actually, now that I think about it some more, I remember being passed by a swarm of boys going at high speed one year. I wonder if yours was among them. 🙂

Thank you for sharing those beautiful picture! I think of GW when I see pictures like that, too.
