Up and running

You’ll meet my friends Nina and Rod when my book comes out, but in the meantime, a week ago Sunday, their college-age daughter ended up in the ER with her appendix gone bad. Laparoscopic surgery, and they sent her home the same day (wow).

Towards the end of the week, her parents were heading off for somewhere about 40 minutes away, and G. didn’t feel up to the excursion yet. No big deal. Their house had been having a power failure, so they hadn’t been able to recharge their cell phones. Again, not a big deal.

But that is why G. could not reach them. So she called her sister, who’s a veterinarian in another state. Who told her, Go! G. had the sense to know she was in too much pain by that point and had better not try to drive herself, and called a friend from church who just happened to have flown home from college for a couple of days. (“You could have called me!” Oh. Didn’t think of that.)

Which is why, after Nina and Rod returned home, they got a knock on their door, and the friend saying, um, G. isn’t home because I took her to the ER at Stanford and they’ve admitted her. Thought you might like to know. Sorry I couldn’t stay, I’ve got to run to catch my flight, ‘bye!

My hubby and I went over to visit G. yesterday, and we were thrilled to see how well she was recovering from her abscess. Meantime, her room was in the same ward, same floor as where I’d been in October, and I saw one of my old nurses. Two rooms over from G. was her high school teacher’s mom and the teacher was there visiting, and G. somehow made the whole thing feel like a party: if you’re going to be sick, you might as well celebrate the flowers.

She and her friend just got added to my to-knit-for list. I’d better get to work. Meantime, just to show off, here’s my newly finished teal Sea Silk shawl.

Oh, poor G.! Wish her a full recovery from me, the Swedish newlywed (duh- I wish I still were!) who knew her back when she was a little girl in Primary…

I will absolutely pass that along, and thank you, Monica. It was Marguerite’s daughter who came to her rescue. Can you believe they’re so old now!??

More well wishes to G. and her folks, and I hope they don’t carry the cold virus that has laid low the entire northeast. This snow storm is nothin’ in comparison.

And a gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS shawl. If I bought the yarn, would you knit one of those for me? I suppose I’ll just have to wait until the book comes out… 🙂

G. is home from the hospital now, and I got a note from her mom about how wonderful it feels to have her being her old self again. And thank you for the good wishes for her–she’s a dear. At three years old she declared she was marrying our youngest, and occasionally I tease her that I’m holding her to it.

As for the shawl, thank you–and my stars, Kristine, can you just imagine how much trouble I could get into if I said on this blog that, oh sure, just ask, anytime. (Let me show you the stats while I go quiver in my boots at the thought.) Rofl! Hey, having that yarn run through your hands for twenty hours or so is part of the experience anyway; you wouldn’t want to miss out on that. It’s seriously nice stuff.

OMG Alison! That is one seriously beautiful shawl! And you look seriously beautiful in it!

OK, can you make ME one TOO ?!? Because, you know, running the store takes all my time and I don’t get to knit so much any more! (will that work?)

Hey, Evelyn, this is all your fault, you know. I so much wanted there to be a teal Sea Silk colorway that didn’t exist, and then you (not knowing that) asked Handmaiden to specially create some for you. And I just innocently happened to, um…google Sea Silk yarn again, thinking, just maybe… And… Well, hey. It was so nice of you to make Christmas and birthday such an easy deal for my husband. As for your question, the phrase, “RUN, Cecil, RUN!” leaps into mind.

Or is that “Run, Sea Silk, Run”?

Alison, I am going to make a confession: I actually did order the teal for you and also because I liked it – I am a “blue girl” too. You had asked me about it back in June, and I ordered it!-)

Comment by Evelyn 02.13.07 @ 7:19 pm

Oh cool! Thank you! And did you make anything with it, too?

Comment by AlisonH 02.13.07 @ 7:57 pm

Not yet! I sold out of the first batch of teal, ordered more and then ordered more again this time also in the 2-ply silk cashmere (soft)!

Alison,

The shawl is magnificent, utterly beautiful.

I’m so glad G. ‘s surgery went well. That is some story! But you in that shawl! Oh, be still my heart! I’m crazy for teal and you look like the cat’s meow in it. Now I want to make one too, but I’m waiting for the book. That color is fantastic. Thanks for showing it off with such delightful stitchery..

Now, to the rest of you. Thank you! Now, if you like that teal, go bug Evelyn to go bug Handmaiden to dye up some more of it and to that depth. It’s gorgeous. But it’s not in their regular lineup, or not yet, anyway.

I wonder if there’ll be any vendors with Sea Silk at Stitches next week. I know my tech editor bought some from a different dyer at a fiberarts fair in Colorado not long ago, so I’m curious to see what might be out there by now.

Yowza! Glad it all worked out!

(and that shawl is seriously decadent)

Your shawl is gorgeous. And the Seasilk hangs beautifully. Just gorgeous. Thanks for telling me about it. Now I really am lustful. What pattern did you use?
