Following the pie piper

(Okay, I supposedly added the photo but it’s not showing up on my view of the post.)

I read recently that stoneware pie pans do by far the best job of making the crusts turn out crisp.

There was an art fair in San Mateo this weekend and my potter friends Mel and Kris were going to be there, and when I asked a few weeks ago if they ever make pie plates, Mel decided to throw some clay on his wheel for me and, literally, give it a whirl.

It’s gorgeous. They and their sons do such nice work. It’s 9″ on the inside bottom, 10″ at the top. I’m already regretting that I only bought one: there were two, with Mel saying he always makes more than what people request because there’s always going to be someone else who wants one.

There is a potluck tomorrow night.

Now I just have to decide what type of pie to make, and I am very open to any suggestions and favorites.

Oh, yum, pie! I just love a good apple pie – one where the apples stay nice and firm, and are piled high and stay together when the pie is sliced. I haven’t yet found a recipe that does that, so I’ll take suggestions, too. Of course, pie lover that I am, any fruit pie is my favorite. With a dab of good vanilla ice cream on the side.

Now I need to find a pretty handmade stoneware pie plate…

Apple is always good, with cheddar grated into the crust.

When my mother was young and in the middle of Montana with no tv, it was popular to have cards and pie nights. All the ladies (it was in the 50’s) would bring a pie and a recipe to share. I now have a recipe box full of “interesting” pie recipes. I think the Nesselrode was very popular.

Then she would turn around and beat the pants all of them in cards. You NEVER wanted to meet my mother across a spread of cards. She played the “genteel” games of canasta and such but her father made a good side hustle as a shill in Poker. My dad would laugh as he was usually at the losers table by the end of the night.

ROTC learned about my maternal side of the family skills in the officer’s room……..

Well, I can’t see the photo, but I’m sure it looks great! My favorite pie is cherry, and honestly I’m perfectly happy with the canned pie filling. With vanilla ice cream, of course!
