I was covering the mango last night, lit by a misplaced flashlight and the Christmas string on the tree, tripped on the novelty of muddy ground, and fell twisting sideways into the tomato bush. No way to know if the pop tent that covered it is damaged; that plant grew right through it like a–okay, kids, ask your folks what a chia pet is. So yeah, a little cushioning there, definitely.

It’s a next-day thing, it always is, but it took me by surprise that when I lifted a more awkward than heavy thing this morning it quite did me in.

I still am having a hard time sitting up straight and I am walking like a ninety-year-old: stooped and slow and watching each step carefully. Must have fallen a lot harder than I thought.

And all day long I’ve been just amazed, going, I only fell and twisted with my own body weight–my daughter’s took it at freeway speed with the force of the weight and momentum of two cars. How does she DO this?! Me, pass the icepacks and I know I’ll be fine in a day or two. Or at worst three.

She amazes me. She’s a trooper.

I covered the mango a lot more carefully tonight. And then, since we hit 39 last night, I put a second cover on top. Just because.

You know very well that you are NOT allowed to do that.

My complete sympathy. As you know, I fell two weeks ago. My advice is to take Motrin or an equivalent on a short-time basis, just to relax the muscles. I know you can’t take aspirin, but Motrin should be OK. Then gradually come off it. My doctor said a fall like mine takes about two weeks of caution and then is OK. I’m finding that exactly right. Move slowly, but keep moving. Love, Mom

NSAIDs are NSAIDs and I react to them all, and let me put out there for anybody googling that ibuprofen has been found to cause aseptic meningitis in lupus patients (per the CDC after a large cluster of cases in San Jose, including someone I know), so I’m afraid the painkiller route is out.

I can also recommend heat…really does a lot to get sore muscles moving again. (ask me about twin pregnancy and how I lift 4 year old twins, etc.?!) I have a big cotton tube sock (size 15, thanks to dh) stuffed with dry rice. I heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes, and then position it wherever. Ahh. Does the trick. Feel better!

I bet it was the twist that did it more than the fall. Either way, I hope you mend quickly.

We are about the same age, and I have had the same feeling of “really, how can I be this stiff? I’m still a youngster…well…um…”

Uh oh! I hope the ice packs and take-it-easy party are working and you are walking less stooped today. It’s always a surprise when our “young” bodies don’t behave like they used to. And Mom is right about one thing, keep moving.
