Another one bites the dust

I got to see my hawk yesterday–twice. The second time, he flew in to just outside the window and perched awhile, choosing to be eye-to-eye for several minutes, a wild thing taking my measure. It made me want to measure up. He had a meal waiting below the window, but first things first.

And I saw him Sunday after the kids and grandkids left, right on cue.

As if he knew.

Christmas Eve more blood tests were run and the day after Christmas, they told me.

Who knew that feeling energetic was a symptom of disease? Fine, can I keep it? It can crash the heart? Oh. Okay. I remember when George HW Bush, his wife Barbara, and their dog Millie were all diagnosed with this at about the same time and some thought the change in him as they tweaked the replacement hormone levels after killing off his out-of-control thyroid possibly cost him reelection.

I know they often name diseases after the person who got the press for describing them first, but I just have to say as an editorial comment on the word: Graves’ is a really, really laughably-stupidly-unhelpful thing to call what you’re going to tell patients they have, don’tcha think?

Autoimmune diseases! Get them here! Collect them all!

Good heavens, when it rains… pours, all that. But still! Seems like you have quite enough to deal with. I so hope it responds to treatment and doesn’t complicate anything else. I’m sure your positive personality will help too.

My neighbor has/had it, and I’m happy to report is doing quite well a year later. She’s feisty, just like you!

If you can collect them all, do you win some sort of a prize? Or is there a Guiness Record for most good done while fighting the largest number of serious medical conditions? You’re definitely in the running for that one.

About the name of the illness… it would be a shame not to give the discoverer of the illness credit simply because he was unlucky enough to be born with what we consider to be an unfortunate last name. (I wonder what they thought of it in 1797 when he was born.)

I love reading about the doctors who made these discoveries. One of the things I read about Robert James Graves is this. “His kindness, his total want of arrogance and his love of truth made this really great man popular.”

But then I have a huge soft spot in my heart for the doctor who realized that adolescents who faint have the same quality of fatigue as those diagnosed with chronic fatigue.

I’ll get off my soap box now.

RobinM’s comment is great.
Sorry to read about the new diagnosis, but hope that now it’s spotted it can be managed.

Wish you didn’t have so many auto-immune diseases in your collection. Truly.

you need to pare down your collection, seriously!

Happy New Year anyway.

I am so sorry you have this new thing to worry about… How quickly can it go away?

I pray you all feel better very soon. Hugs to you all!

Wow! I’ve heard of “better the devil you know” and it’s better to know why you’re feeling off-kilter, but at some point you’re just being an overachiever, you know that?

(And of course I now have a vision of a bunch of little devils in kilts doing a kick-line…..)

I believe 2013 has done its best to convince you to say good riddance. and yet, it brought you Hudson, so it wasn’t all bad.

I hope treatment is simple, swift, and effective. And glad that you’ve had Parker and Hudson to keep you company while you waited for the news.

As my endocrinologist told me, if you have to have an autoimmune disease, Graves’ is a good one to have! It’s controllable with medication, and if the meds don’t work, it’s easy to fix the overactive thyroid. I was diagnosed in August 09, and had to kill my thyroid with radioactive iodine in March 2012. I feel just fine, no side effects, even over a year later.

Of all the stuff you have, this is the most minor one, I think!
