Small favors

I found a new amaryllis bud today, a Dancing Queen, one of my favorites. How did I miss seeing that coming up earlier! I brought it inside next to the first one just to make sure nothing out there develops a taste for the flowers, giving it a good watering.

The male Cooper’s showed up this evening and this time we all got to see him together.

Michelle: “That’s a big bird!”

Richard, appreciatively: “Just wait till he spreads his tail.”

Me, after we all watched him fly away at last: “There’s a flock of finches and endless doves but only one hawk pair. They’re individuals.”

Meantime, this is what the qiviut looked like this afternoon. I lay in bed last night, sleepless, wondering why on earth the C word should seem any worse in the dark than anything else when it probably wasn’t even a bad version, and thought about what I most wanted to do next–and this was it. It won’t take me very long to work on but it is exactly what I need right now: the pure qiviut is soft (well *yeah*), it is lovely, and I am knitting with the confidence I was lacking on the first try that I have the pattern worked out exactly the way it should be done. I know more now. It feels good.

Michelle exclaimed yesterday over the Epiphany project when I twirled it around my shoulders off the blocking to see; she agreed with me that it was one of my prettiest ever (the way one should always feel at the end of a project)–and now it is ready to be mailed. From Epiphany to Lorraine’s qiviut: I’m glad I have had these to soothe my fingers and my eyes and my soul. That, and the presence by whatever means possible of my family and friends. You have helped so much, and I am so grateful.

Friends from church came over today and scrubbed my car for me just because I can’t, I can’t be in the sunlight where I would be able to see what I was doing and it has a crack in the windshield so I can’t do a drive-through. They stepped in and took care of all that, borrowing my vacuum and an extension cord too and cheerfully working away till it was perfect. Wow.

One day down, the rest of a week to go…

Now those are friends who are really friends. What a joy to know these folks!

Though I only know you through your blog and WHNHH, you seem already to be a person who is observant, who is able to stop and treasure individual moments, and who is already pretty aware of the things that count most in life. So I do very much hope that this current health scare is merely the exclamation point on the way you already live your life, and that the biopsy results show this tissue to be minor, and easily dealt with. In the mean time, surround yourself with and take comfort from your birds, your family, and your yarn!

Praying for peace in your heart so you can get the rest you need to heal.

I am praying for you, and thanking God for all the gifts for you — the hawk and squirrels, the Dancing Queen, the SuperSoaker, your wonderful family . . . and really good friends who will wash your car.

You’ve already survived lots of scary words, like Lupus, Chrones, or for that matter, Pregnant. Some people are even scared of the word Grandma. Some of those scary words you have learned to live with, and others you have learned to love. So focus on words like Quiviat.

I have a nieghbor whose license plate reads “Yak Huggr.” He got the car for his daughter. I asked if it was a reference to Tibet or to qiviat. He looked really puzzled and said, “Well, she was supporting rights for Tibet.” Then his wife added, “Be we adore qiviat.” (I’m assuming that at some point she told him what it is.)

if anything can get your mind off things, it’s quiviut.

Hey you. I was working on Norah Gaughan’s Flower Child (you know, the one you helped track down more yarn for) and I missed up. I ripped out the very little bit that I had started in the front. And it was a good thing as I found a WONDERFUL bead shop in Ocean City NJ where I found little tiny shells to take the place of one of the bobbles (which, like all sane people, I hate). I will send you a picture so you can ohhh and ahh appropriately.

Does that work to distract you?

India says it so well, how could I add to that? Except to say that I feel the confidence in your fingers through your words, and it just feels right for me to be confident that all will, indeed, be well.

The new guy made it through his surgery just fine, yesterday, and may go home as soon as Sunday. He is already feeling much more comfortable. I came home and slept for six hours 🙂 Nights can be scary. Nights are when we feel small, and we just want our mommies. Or our daddies. But morning always comes. Always. And with it, joy. Sending you love and peace and strength and hope and joy from North Texas.
