A letter that arrived today, and I’m sure she won’t mind my sharing it:

Dear Ms. Hyde:

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding civility in Congress and for the very thoughtful gift of a royal baby alpaca knit hat as part of your Warm Hats, Not Hot Heads campaign. I apologize for the delay in responding to your letter.

I appreciate learning your thoughts and of your desire to carry out change in the way members of both chambers of Congress communicate. You will be pleased to know that members of both political parties are discussing ways to bring more mutual respect, and less hot rhetoric, to our discourse. We need individuals in public service who love to serve the people, who value fairness, and who have the courage to make an objective decision after listening to all sides of an issue.

Again, thank you for sharing your views with me and for your very thoughtful gift. I commend you for your efforts to promote sensible public discourse through your Warm Hats, Not Hot Heads campaign. Please do not hesitate to contact me again about this or other issues of concern to you.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer

United States Senator

She apologized for the lateness, but I would say it arrived on a day when that lift did me much good and I am delighted that she took the time. Well done, Senator, thank you!

Funny how it works out that way! And I would hope that they are sincere in their efforts to get along and get things done but, sadly, as still seeking evidence of that 🙁

What a wonderful note! Civility is not dead when people can still come up with the manners to write such a kind thank you….good for you, Alison, in persisting with the campaign. It is definitely of value, even to those of us who are watching another country’s election, far away!

Thanks too for your notes on my blog lately. Each one is very cheering as I work through this time of waiting. 🙂

always did like her — and she has been an ongoing voice of reason through all the craziness —

well done indeed!

I am glad to see that she had the sense and sensibility to write this note. I hope idea of mutual respect and civility in discourse will grow and continue.

From what I’ve read about Senator Boxer, she is quite outspoken in her views. Apparently there are some who take this for disrespect because it does not conform to their own view. Frankly, I’ll go with Barbara.

Bravo! I’m glad they realize it’s a problem, and I hope they can make some sincere progress in civility, with respect…

Do you remember learning to write notes like that in school? I do. I don’t think they teach anything of the sort anymore, and it’s a pity.

Congratulations on getting it, she’s obviously an excellent representative, and has good manners to boot!
((((Hugs))))

Bread and butter notes are the best!

Stupid question time. Is that a Mormon temple that we go by in Chevy Chase, MD? Significant other and I were arguing (we went down to Monticello – lovely place, however, stepson and I are both sick, sick, sick.) ANYWAY. I said if it looked like Cinderella’s castle with spires and no crosses it was probably a Mormon Temple. He rolled his eyes at me.

So, is it?

So very cool!! I only ever got one letter back from my folks – I’m so glad that you got this one, with such a hopeful tone 🙂

I must agree with Cathy…would be nice, but not seeing any evidence to show this is in process.

Comment by Ruth 04.23.11 @ 7:12 pm

Afton, yes, that’s a Mormon temple that we can see nicely from the DC Beltway and it’s beautiful to see it all lit up at night. I suppose one day maybe I’ll get to see more of it. I loved my visit to the special places in Temple Square in Salt Lake City a few years ago. Another friend recently told me that her sister had visited the one near DC and that it’s traditional to do that before you get married (if you’re a member of that faith and live in this area). But I’m glad you got to see Monticello and sorry you’re sick and hoping it didn’t ruin the trip and you’re feeling better.

Alison, what a wonderful letter. Between Senator Boxer (from the west coast) and Senator Mikulski (from the east coast), shouldn’t they all be doing better??
