A side trip

So the plan was, turn in that last final of the semester and then go into surgery that day and the baby would come three weeks later, by which time Richard-the-younger would have recovered enough to be really helpful.

Which means he had his ACL replaced Friday and you know how the rest of that story complied with their plans.

We were at the grocery store this afternoon when we got a text from him: in the ER. Suspected blood clot. MRI in a moment.

He did not respond to his phone.

We called our other kids and went home and waited to hear, fully aware of what a blood clot could potentially do to a father of four days.

I can’t tell you how glad I was when the phone finally rang: the swelling and the pain, yes; blood clot, no.  Good thing he took it seriously, though, because you just don’t mess with what that could have been.

Unto us our son is given.  And his son, in time for a Christmas that merits a lot of thankful celebrating this year. And with the way things turned out, Richard gets to spend a lot of time sitting holding his newborn.

Who likes to hold onto him, too.

sometimes the hardest thing to do as a parent is to listen to that still small voice that reminds us that the best thing for our children is to take care of ourselves, so that we can be what we need to be for our children. it’s a process i am still learning

Awwww….such a *cute* picture of Parker holding hands with his daddy! And how huge a difference in size!

My neighbor went through similar scariness. This summer, just after her grandson was born, her daughter (the baby’s mother) suffered a ruptured appendix. All’s well now but there was a lot of worry. Glad your BIg Buddy and Little Buddy are doing fine. Hope your family enjoys a very peaceful holiday!

Sorry I’ve been MIA in the comments (lots of little things keeping me away, nothing major). But I come back to some wonderful news: children home for Xmas, a grandson, and a happy ending to a potentially scary story.

Merry Christmas to all of you! And welcome to the world, little Parker!

I love what our Jewish cousins say, that to have a child is to walk around with your heart outside your body. So glad that your news was, ultimately, good. Merry Christmas!

What a way for you to celebrate – holidays, healthy children and new grandchildren. Is there anything better?

See you on the flip side (by the way – the house has been SOLD!!!)

So glad “New Daddy” is doing well and didn’t have the scary result that could have been. Such a beautiful new family. God bless them and you!

I’m so glad your latest emergency was a non-emergency. My mom just got home from the hospital today after being there for more than a week. When she went in, the CAT scan showed something wrong with either her appendix or her colon. As it turned out, she left behind the one everyone would rather leave behind. But it was complicated, so she hasn’t exactly eaten anything for a week. She may find Christmas dinner a little daunting. But my strep throat is responding really well to the antibiotics and I feel much better–so we really have a lot to be thankful for too.

Richard Jr. should be okay with Parker holding onto him that tightly!

If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans…

His way is always best. The last photo proves it.

Wonderful news! Congratulations. (I do think that it’s weird that someone who’s still a child in my eyes is now a father. Must be the fact that I haven’t seen him in all these years! It looks like he’s a great dad already though.) So, happy everything!

So glad it wasn’t a blood clot. Love the pictures. What a way to recover…holding your newborn baby. It can’t get better any better than that.
