Happy Mother’s Day to you and yours at the Hyde Nature Preserve!

Many years ago, several parakeets got loose here. They managed to survive and multiply. We now have quite a few of them living in the trees at north area of our lake.

They have become quite a tourist attraction. I love to listen to them chatter.

Oh, that is indeed a parakeet (once had one that color). Almost assuredly it has escaped from some home. If you can see a metal band around one leg, it is definitely someone’s pet. “Hyde Nature Preserve” — a most fitting description.

It’s a budgerigar from down under. They fly in large flocks in the outback but are also kept as pets. Blue over the top of the beak indicates a male, beige is female. They can be taught to talk.

I herd there are flocks of Parakeets (aka Budgerigars) in San Francisco.. I think there was a documentary about them.

Yes, the parrots of Telegraph Hill–I haven’t seen the documentary, but they were large ones, not parakeets, you couldn’t miss them. There were a few large green parrots in our city years ago, and I saw one a few times and once picked up a large bright lime-green feather off my driveway. It has been thought that ours probably merged with the group up in San Francisco.
