Shawl or vaporware?

He came home from work tonight, looked at the work in my hands as I was finally casting off, and proclaimed, “A cloud!” Have I mentioned I love that man?

Over dinner last night, I had explained to Richard why I had knit a few scarves while having a shawl in progress, something I normally avoid: I’d had a new design idea, had tried it out, and…

…Ripped it out, he added helpfully.

Yup. Back to the yoke. (Swatch? When you’re so sure it’ll be perfect?)

So when the scarves were done, there was nothing for it but to dive back into that shawl with a new new idea (Swatch? What is this word, swatch?) and simply see, again, how it  would work out.  I threw in yet another tangent as I went along, writing down each change exactly so, hoping not to be drawing thick black lines through those instructions later.

In the blob, it looks good this time.

Blocked?

Amazing how I managed to finally get those two scarves blocked tonight, isn’t it!

Pretty scarf! I googled “water turtles scarf” and came up with: “And our water turtles scarf up lots of slugs and snails, which is good news for our neighbors!”

Very pretty scarf!
Your Monterey Shawl is in my queue of wintertime entertainment. 🙂 I just need to get the right yarn for it. My lys NEVER has what I ask for..the owner is from Germany and has her own favorite yarns. Sigh.

Angel hair? You are able to knit angel hair? You must be ready to wear a wig if that’s all the yarn you used. 😉

Lovely scarf. Sounds like you’re having fun with your new adventure. *applauds*

How lovely! Don’t you just love it when the thing on the needles looks like the dream in your mind? d

The scar is beautiful! I’m sure that the shawl will be gorgeous post blocking as well!

Well, the scarf is outstandingly beautiful, so I’m sure the Fluff knitted up will block to its fullest potential too. Since you helped me resolve not to REALLY block Colonnade, I shall patiently await Fluff’s appearance, however long it takes.

Swatches are for [pejorative term here]. I love the cloud comment.

Blocking is the bad part. Congratulations on getting them done.

I have a miniature 3 repeat swatch of the shawl I’m working on, where I can play with my ideas. I tried using existing lace patterns, but I ended up frogging, now I’m winging it, but with the swatch for support.
My hands can’t take working those long rows, then ripping, then working again.

Gee, I wish I knew what you gals were talking about. On the other hand, Alison, did you see For Better or Worse in the comics this (Thursday) morning?

Humor:

From church bulletins:
“Coming up — Theological Open House. We discuss thought provoking topics. Your opinions are hardly welcome.”

“All singles invited to join us Friday, 7 p.m. for the annual Christmas sing-alone’”

Well, why swatch when the knitting in your thoughts is perfect?! (that’s how I get into my worst messes, honestly…)

Wishing you all happy knitting adventures with clouds!

LynnM, it’s the stitch pattern from the Water Turtles shawl in the book, three repeats across with an extra stitch knit plain at each side. Cast on 33 and away you go.

Yep, cloud. Followed by pine needles against the sky.

(swatch? for shawls? eh? Frogging is much more fun! )

The blob will eat me! Lace looks so very uninspiring before it’s blocked . . .
