The summer that Sam, my oldest, was 12, both she and I were about to hit something we’d never had to face before, me in my mothering and she in the land of classmates: the trauma of middle school. I wanted her to go into it having something to be unique and cool with, for her to be able to do something nobody else she knew could; with her permission, I signed us both up for lessons in handspinning, with a few dyeing lessons too in the six-week summer course taught by Karen Brayton-McFall of the now-gone Rug and Yarn Hut.

There was another mother/12-year-old daughter pair in that class. And that is how we met Gigi and Jasmin, nowadays the Knitmore Girls of podcast fame.  Gigi later helped test-knit a pattern for my book; Jasmin has been exceedingly generous with her sock knitting, and both of them with their friendship.

Gigi’s in the hospital right now and I am waiting for the word.   I don’t dare visit, not with the last of the bug going on. (I had fun yesterday, but I overdid it.)  I am adding in my prayers with her family’s and hoping for her to get back to normal quickly.

By the way, I mentioned my sister-in-law here recently.  When they got the results of her surgery and biopsy, the doctors told her, if you’re going to get breast cancer, you want this kind of breast cancer. If you’re going to find it, you want to find it at this stage.  They told her it was the best news it could have been.

Okay, now, Gigi, your turn.  We’re with you.

p.s. Gigi, this one’s for you.  (Don’t miss it.)  Enjoy.  And if it doesn’t work (hah!), we’ll sneak some ice cream into your room some other way.

We never know how paths will cross — and perhaps recross. Quite a fascinating story.

Now, young lady, please do not overdo, and you know to what I refer.

Ok, huma:

WHERE IS MY SUNDAY PAPER?!

The irate customer calling the newspaper office loudly demanded to know where her Sunday edition was.

“Madam”, said the newspaper employee, “today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is not delivered until tomorrow, on Sunday”.

There was a long pause on the other end of the phone, and then she was heard to mutter,

“Well, I guess that explains why no one was at church today.”

Good News for your SIL. I’ll keep her in my prayers and I do you.
Question:
Mom has 2 Amarillis and they have been in the pots and sitting outside all summer. Is now the time to bring them in and put them in the dark. Years ago I had a few but I can’t remember what I did with them other than I put them in a box and in a dark closet till the buds pushed up.
Since you are the Queen of the Amarillas, yours always look beautiful. How do you do it? Should I feed them blossom booster before I put them to bed? Thanks so much Alison.

Good news for your SIL. It is the best news you could ask for, and I wish her the best.
My thoughts are with Gigi and her family. They sound like such wonderful people.

Prayers for Gigi and her family, and her medical team. Glad the news was as good as it gets for your SIL.

My concern – how can you be unhappy when you’re standing at an icecream machine?!

Reading the amaryllis comment above, I’ll chime in with my own question: if I want to purchase a bulb to bloom between thanksgiving and Christmas, when should I start watering a bulb?

So glad SIL got optimistic news.

Glad your SIL’s prognosis is good! Hopefully you’ll have good news from Gigi soon too.

I *love* the link. Now I just need to stop giggling before my boss asks why. (I wonder if I could get him to install one at the office? No, no, *bad* idea…I’d gain weight.)
