Scared the be-jay-birds out of that thing

Saw a bluejay chasing a squirrel down the fenceline so fast I didn’t know that little bushytail could do it.  Just to let me know who was ruling the roost around here, Little Bird Blue came over to pose triumphantly for me.

Now look at that thing. I grew up with Eastern jays, frumpily plump. This one’s ready for a bikini and the beach.  imgp7835

Meantime, I’m not quite done with the first 430 yard skein of the seacell/silk fingering weight I bought from Dianne at Stitches, and this shawl already stretches to 18″ at a guess, pre-blocking, across 397 stitches.  Nice!  imgp7829I want it short and tied in front, a style I like with a lightweight yarn like this one is. I’m going to take a second ball and add an edging, though, so I’m not done yet. Then just add water, and the lace stretches out on its towel and shows off its stitches.

And then.  I got a package in the mail today, a delightful gift from Karin.  This is my favorite silk jacket and her Wine colorway in an 80/20 merino/nylon blend, an on-the-heavy-side sock yarn.  What a match!  And unlike most such blends, it feels so soft that I was sure at first it must have been mislabeled and pure merino in real life.  It is seriously lovely stuff. Thank you, Karin.

(Okay, now, hold still Miss Jay while I measure you for your suit. I’ll make sure to have enough yarn left over for you. How about a little ribbon tied at the back–you know, bow-‘tocks goes so well with that look.  Can’t have you being, you know, nekkid as a jaybird over there.)

Thinner but just as menacing as the Jay Birds around here in Ohio! I love how they can mimic other birds, bullies though they are – even with the squirrels!

Beautiful yarn that so wonderfully matches your silk blouse – how lucky you are to have such friends 🙂

Inspired,
Cathy

That’s quite a yarn you spin about the Jay!

Cliff reminded me of a joke that a former doctor, now retired, told me many years ago.

A drunk comes wobbling out on the ice with all kinds of fishing gear. He has a pole, a bucket filled with various gear, and a little stool. He plunks down on the stool, and reaches in the bucket for an axe. He’s about to try to chop a hole in the ice, when a voice booms down on him, “DON’T CUT A HOLE IN THE ICE! THERE”S NO FISH DOWN THERE! Startled, the drunk looks around, but doesn’t see anyone. So he shoves his gear about 10 feet across the ice, and again pulls out the axe. “HEY! I TOLD YOU NOT TO CUT A HOLE IN THE ICE!! THERE’S NO FISH DOWN THERE!”

Once again he looks around, stands up on unsteady legs, and turns all the way around, but he sees no one. Now he picks up all his gear, and trudges clear across the ice, plops down, and once more pulls out the axe. “HEY! IDIOT! I TOLD YOU NOT TO CUT A HOLE IN THE ICE. THERE’S NO FISH DOWN THERE!!

Thoroughly bewildered, the drunk stands again, looks all around, but sees no one. He stammers, “Uh, uh, uh, … are ..you, uh, …God?”

“NO,I’M NOT GOD. I’M THE MANAGER OF THIS ICE RINK!”

Alison – stupid question. Can you get knitter’s elbow? My left arm is killing me, especially after knitting.

Sigh.

Not unlike the Mafia’s “protection”, you’ll have no more trouble with squirrels. The Jay will take care of you.

Of course, now your only problem is the jay…

I would agree that that shawl looks like a cloud… I bet it’s soooooooo soft too!

Thank you for the smile you bring to my face so many mornings. 🙂

Ha! You do make me laugh, Alison! Can’t wait to see both shawls done – how lovely! And Don – Great joke today!

Mr. Scruff often indicates to me that clothing is a tremendous nuisance. It will be time to go outdoors, and there’s dumb old Robin fussing with a hat, a coat, a scarf. Can’t she see it’s time to be on the move? All that shilly-shallying about is just so much extra time spend indoors that could be better spent outdoors.

Love the yarn and the blouse!
Jays are too too. Bossy. But it comes in handy sometimes. That fixed that. 😉

Several years ago 3 or 4 of the eastern ones were in my wisteria tree/bush hiding from a red-tailed hawk. The hawk had seen them. They fought, and the hawk won. Took one the jays out (of the wisteria) for (it’s) lunch.

Oh, Alison, you crack me up! Just what I needed today. So very happy that your wildlife is keeping you, and us, entertained. Thank you!

Yes that is indeed quite the match! Holy Cow. Even though the yarn says “Spilled Wine” for the colorway, please don’t ever spill wine on the blouse OR the knitted item you will make with it.

I’m just really glad it’s soft enough for you. 🙂

Hahah as usual, entertained. Thanks for the wildlife watch 😉 Love when there’s yarn incorporated as well. Tough crowd I guess 😉

Karin mentioned to me after this posted that the yarn works up on the same size sock needles to the same thickness as other sock yarns.

And hey you guys–that Botox pun in the second to last sentence *was* a bit obscure, but…

Jays can be pretty aggressive — I’m betting that squirrel won’t try that again 🙂
