Alison’s status

“The doctor said the recovery would not be linear.  This is a non-linear day.” The fever is not bad today, but the patient is beat up and exhausted by 12:30.  The “they” don’t have the heart to bully her at the moment.  She is miserable.  Hopefully with a good sleep she will fill better this evening. Her mom says she felt well enough this morning to try to get her hair washed, and that completely wiped her out.

Well, shiny hair is probably over-rated anyway. Nicely rested smiles are ever so much better. Keep your chin up, Alison – my prayers, as always, are with you…Debra

Oh, crap. I was really hoping she’d be much better today.

I lit candles for her and for her medical team today. There is power in prayer, I believe, and I know that she’s in good hands.

Thanks for letting us know Rich. As always my prayers are with you all.

Comment by Eileen 01.18.09 @ 3:01 pm

Oh, Alison, I pray that tomorrow will be a better day for you, one that will lift your spirits and allow you to start thinking about your return to some sense of normalcy and your next knitting project.

I predict that you will be much, much better on Tuesday so that you can watch Obama’s inauguration. You are such a supporter!

Comment by Joansie 01.18.09 @ 3:07 pm

As always, thank you for taking the time to give us an update. As long as there is the word recovery being used, even in connection with non-linear, I’ll go along with it.

Prayers go out to everyone taking care of Alison, and of course Alison herself.

Please tell her that my amaryllis “Minerva” is still going strong, that there is a second stalk with possibly multiple flowers. Big, strong, balanced, steady, keeping vigil.

Comment by karin 01.18.09 @ 3:14 pm

Thanks for the update. I’m keeping you all in my thoughts.

Comment by Jocelyn 01.18.09 @ 3:22 pm

What an ordeal. As always, praying and thinking of you all everyday.

Comment by rebecca jc 01.18.09 @ 3:43 pm

Prayers keep coming from my direction. I can understand wanting to feel clean, although I’m sorry it wiped you out, Alison. Praying tomorrow will be better, after a good night’s rest.

Comment by Pegi 01.18.09 @ 3:50 pm

I’ve been reading your blog for many months and I have your latest book which has a pattern which I can’t wait to start. I haven’t commented before but I feel compelled to write tonight. I have been checking on you daily and I just wanted you to know that you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Please know that all the way in Toronto, Ontario, Canada there is someone sending you healing thoughts. Tomorrow is going to be a better day.

Praying that rest will help, and tomorrow will be better.

Comment by Renee 01.18.09 @ 4:15 pm

Thank you for the update, Richard, and prayers continue.

Alison — I started the last of the lace shawls for the wedding today, and completely ruined an entire pot-full of chicken stock. I can’t wait to tell you all about what a doofus I am.

Also, Lucy stood on her own for a full minute before she decided she’d better hold onto something, is competently signing “more” and is working on “please.” (it always goes in that order, doesn’t it?)

Much love to you and yours.

Comment by Kristine 01.18.09 @ 4:25 pm

Mom washed my hair. I couldn’t so much as lift the shampoo.

Comment by AlisonH 01.18.09 @ 4:47 pm

Sending lots and lots of love to you, Alison. My heart is with you. Thank you for the update.

Comment by Romi 01.18.09 @ 5:14 pm

Clean hair is great but please do not over do it. I will be praying that tomorrow is a better day.
Thanks for keeping up in the loop.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Alison for you to gain back your strength and good health. I just have strong faith that you will be well soon. Just let your Mom and Rich take care of you. Each day will get a little better. Hugs to you. Bonnie

Comment by Bonnie 01.18.09 @ 5:30 pm

Glad to have the update. Thank you Rich. What a wonderful mom to wash hair for you, knowing how it helps one to feel better when those types of things are taken care of.

Comment by Ruth 01.18.09 @ 5:39 pm

It’s better than beat up and exhausted upon wakening like a week ago (let me know if the Pollyanna schtick wears thin)…

Thinking of you. Sending energetic thoughts.

Comment by Lene 01.18.09 @ 5:40 pm

Take care of yourself, Alison, My thoughts are with you.

Comment by Anna 01.18.09 @ 5:54 pm

Oh, dear Alison – here’s a soft, loving hug and some cooling drops of the healing power that comes with so many of us holding you in our thoughts and hearts on your brow – take care.

Comment by farm-witch 01.18.09 @ 6:29 pm

Alison, my thoughts and prayers are with you for healing progress, and also with your mom and Rich for taking so very good care of you.

I’m impatiently waiting for my KnitPicks order which includes a copy of your book. And no mail tomorrow. Figures… I’m antsy to start a shawl 🙂

Hugs honey. Lots of love and good thoughts winging your way.

Comment by Tiny Tyrant 01.18.09 @ 8:27 pm

The good thing is you’ll feel way better sooner because of the whole non-linearity thing. I should know, I’m a physicist.

Clean hair is highly overrated.

Comment by Michelle 01.18.09 @ 8:42 pm

Oh, I do remember the first time after a major surgery when I could wash my hair — and the first time I could take a shower. It was totally exhausting but I did feel a lot better. I fully understand the desire and the exhaustion. Rest up and tomorrow will certainly be better for the clean hair and time for the meds to work. (Did you have another sip of water or gatorade while reading this? smile) Hope you can feel the healing messages from the right coast (right as in opposite from left).

Comment by sjanova 01.18.09 @ 9:15 pm

Drat. One day at a time, hour at a time, minute at a time if you must.

This week, I have been wearing the pure white Peace of My Mind Shawl you knit for me. It’s the softest baby alpaca ever.

When I wear it, you are hugging me rather than me hugging you, but it makes me feel closer to California. I feel better from that connection.

I’m going to wear red white and blue again, as I did for 4th of July, when we sing tomorrow night at a Food Bank Benefit/Inauguration night party. It’s in my favorite part of town. I will wear the white shawl as part of my costume/ensemble, and think of you as I sing sappy 1920s love songs.

Big hugs. Remember, be selfish. You need all energy for whatever your body wants. Drink water, it’s better than that barium, right? Take a sip right now… good.

I feel so powerless… sending more love is all I can do.

Lynndy

I don’t think anything in life is linear. I just hope you keep making more and more progress each day. Sending hugs and prayers.

Comment by AmyS 01.19.09 @ 1:18 am

Continue getting as much fluids as you possibly can and rst as much as humanly possible.
Remember we all love you.

The Boys (Bligh and KooKoo) and girls (Sandy and Charlie) send healing Purrs and Nosey Kisses to you, your mom and Richard.

Comment by Danielle from SW MO 01.19.09 @ 5:47 am

Alison, I know I’m repeating myself and repeating the other comments when I say I’m thinking of you and praying for your recovery to be quicker. I wish improvement could be exponential (hey that’s “non-linear” too, right?) You’ll have to let us all know when you’re strong enough to wash your own hair.

Comment by LynnM 01.19.09 @ 5:50 am

Okay Alison one step at a time. Take it easy, get better, at least good enough so you can stretch out on the couch tomorrow – there is something you need to watch on TV on Tuesday, about, oh, noon EST. Okey doke?

Love
Afton

There’s nothing like a “they” with the clinical acumen to know when to bully a person. And when not to. Thanks for the update! Sorry Alison, that you’re feeling beat up. Hope you feel much better very soon.

Comment by RobinM 01.19.09 @ 6:24 am

Nothing makes me feel less like a sick person than getting my hair washed. I hope it lifted her spirits for a while anyway!

Comment by Channon 01.19.09 @ 6:48 am

I missed you today in church. So I am sending along the sweet messages–blessings from keeping covenants, yearning to be known and accepted by the Lord, seeking Him who promises: “Fear not, I am with thee…”

Comment by Marguerite 01.19.09 @ 8:05 am

It’s just like knitting – you knit along and then, drats, you have to frog. Alison, step away from the pond. It’s time to knit lace. Plus, my Julia inspired socks are just about done. I want to show them to you. (That’s as close to bullying as I can get.)

Comment by Linda W 01.19.09 @ 8:49 am

I am hoping that this Monday will be a turn for the good. I keep praying for you.

Hugs,

Pam

I have been reading your blog for a long time and have never made a comment before, but now I feel compelled to thank you. You have the most wonderful attitude. You have given so much to so many. Now we are trying to return the favor by keeping you in our arms and lifting you up virtually. Let others care for you the way you have so generously given of yourself. Love, prayers, warmth and comfort come your way from your many fans. And many thanks to those who keep us posted.

Comment by FrequentFrogger 01.19.09 @ 11:40 am

Sending thoughts, love, and support your way, Alison. I fervently hope the Humira starts to do its good work soon and brings you relief and freedom to do all the things you love!

Comment by anna 01.19.09 @ 12:00 pm

I’ll just join my hopes and wishes with all the others. I do name you in the healing prayer part of our services, I figure every bit can help!

Comment by Margo Lynn 01.19.09 @ 12:00 pm

Sending you healing vibes.

Comment by Mari 01.19.09 @ 12:14 pm

You can add my good wishes to the deluge of them heading your way!

Comment by Carol 01.19.09 @ 12:54 pm

Linear, Shminear, we want you well now! You’ve been put through enough with this stuff already! Ok, I won’t go so far as to pray for patience because last time I did I got a strong willed child! But prayers do continue for you and all the family.

I know clean hair feels good, so now that you’re all freshened up, have a good nap and feel better when you awaken.

From one Lupie to another, hope you feel better soon!!!! Prayers, healing and love from Mom and I.

Comment by Serena 01.19.09 @ 3:07 pm

Hey, Alison, I’m very late hearing aboutyour current condition and am sorry to read about all the obstructions to your better health.

Glad to have met you and Richard in Burlington so I can better picture to whom I’m sending best wishes and strength.

When you’re better, contact your congressmen/women and give them some more ammo. This is ridiculous.

Finished the shawl for my sister, just have to weave in a few more ends. I take it to meetings to work on but often it’s cold so I end up wearing it instead of working on it – and it’s NOT my color, oh horrors!

You’re in my morning and evening prayers, and I also pray that they make their way upward without freezing!

Love,
Sue in NH

Comment by Sue 01.19.09 @ 5:02 pm

Thanks for the updates – I’m looking forward to her return – both to health and writing.
Cheers.
