Kaleidoscope Yarns in Vermont

redwoodedI will be at Copperfield Books in Santa Rosa tomorrow to see Stephanie, and this time we’re not getting caught in traffic on the way.

I will be signing books, hanging out, and generally making a cheerful nuisance of myself at Kaleidoscope Yarns in Essex Junction, Vermont, on Friday, Nov. 14th, starting at 1:00 pm, and signing any copies on order as well as for those there in person.

Twenty-one years ago, after our moving van got done unloading our belongings, billing for 3333 miles for the trip from New Hampshire (a memorable number, that), the elderly retiree across the street sauntered over to introduce himself by way of saying, “I saw them taking a snow shovel off that truck.  Whaddya think you’re gonna need THAT here for?”

at the foot of/and the redwoodHe was right. It made a lousy spade for our new Californian garden, and I know because I did try it once because that’s all I had. I figured, well, if it ever does snow, I’ll rent the thing out for a hundred bucks an hour.  Not a snowplow in hundreds of miles, I’ll make a killing.

My husband’s offer letter on the job here promised, in writing, “No home delivery of snow.”

I could get all wistful and say I miss real weather and that I’d be hoping to make snow angels for nostalgia’s sake while we’re back in New England, but you know?  The last time I said any such thing about visiting the East Coast, my flight was the last one allowed down at Dulles airport–five minutes ahead of the tornado that likewise touched down at Dulles airport, and we skidded sideways for a moment there on the runway.

Boring weather isn’t so bad after all.

looking up from thereBesides.  I wear Birkis now.  Snow angels in Birkenstocks is just too Calif—well, now, wait a minute, this IS Vermont we’re talking about…

Oh, that’s too far north and west for me to come, even without a new baby. I love Vermont though. And I wear Birkenstocks in New England. Not all winter, but I’m wearing them now with socks. I can’t bend over to tie my shoes anymore. 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful trip. How’s your hand today?

The phone just rang. Soft-tissue only, no break. I did a good job with the ice and elevation thing yesterday to keep the swelling down, so it’s not too bad, thanks.

Oh, give me snow anytime. You can stay indoors by a warm fire with your knitting and wait for it to get better unlike tornados, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

Ha! I’ll meet you there, wearing my birkis and handknit socks. 🙂

And don’t joke; November, here? Could snow. Especially if it keeps being so cold at night, and so rainy.

Oh! Jealous (but not in an evil way) that you’ll be in EJ – where I lived for 20+ years! I owned 6 different houses in that town (one at a time).

I grew up in upstate NY and no matter which month I choose to travel from my now-home in CA to visit family in NY, I end up seeing snow. My trip this year was in April and we saw still-frozen lakes in the Adirondacks and snow flurries along the way.

They’d probably get one of those Hundred Year storms if I ever dared to come in January…

Ha! What do neighbors know. 😉

Glad to hear the hand isn’t broken, and hope what injury there is, is soon in the past and you’re back knitting like usual.

I’m wondering if I can arrange my schedule to include a trip to Vermont. Essex Junction is a long day trip, but it is doable as such. Will you be stopping anyplace else in New England? Webs, perhaps? she asked hopefully…

Hi, Alison! I wear my Birks in snow – that is what thick wool socks are for, after all!

I am requesting the day off when you’re in VT. If approved (we’re short-handed right now), I will be there with bells on! (OK, maybe my Alison shawl)

Snow angels! Love ’em. I hope we get enough snow this year to make one.
