I have many of these pics. There is something magical about skiing to me. I have a pic of me at the top of a ski trail and it looks like I’m at the end of the rainbow…

But what’s not shown in that picture is, just to the left, the rescuers working hard to save Nicholas’s life. And there is that shaft of light reaching down in their direction…

Jim called them a few days later to let them know they had succeeded, and to thank them. And to ask: the answer was, 30 feet. His son fell 30 feet, and there was nothing the parents could do but wait for the senseless machine to deposit them on the top of that mountain, away from him.

But a member of the ski patrol had seen him going down, had raced down there at top speed to him while radioing for help. He’d gotten to the child as immediately as anybody humanly could.

I took Nicholas his amaryllis today and got to see him, at home finally, and I cannot tell you how wonderful that felt.
