Red amaryllis

We interrupt this frigid January to haul my birthday present, a red amaryllis bulb, outside for a photo session. Add a little water and window time to that dead-looking brown clumpy thing in the dirt and see what you get. It’s that simple.

Happy Birthday! It’s my husband’s birthday, too. Can’t wait to see your book.

Thank you, and happy birthday to your husband! And, oh, oops, sorry, mine was December 13th, which is when I got given this bare bulb. They bloom fast! Amaryllises are the perfect antidote to winteriness, and the only birthday present I ever ask for (well, other than Sea Silk yarn this year.) That may be why I’m up to (running off and counting) 39 bulbs in their pots, and am glad I have skylights as well as windows in this house.

Happy birthday to you!!! Those are just gorgeous!

Lovely! I love (and maybe envy a little) people who have green thumbs, as I unfortunately do not.

Just marvelous colors. Makes me wish I was an expert spinner/dyer – to see if I could capture and recreate that velvety, rich red with that hint of luster that living things have in yarn. Lovely. Inspiring. Sigh. Someday. (mentally files it away) – I’d even call it ‘Red Amaryllis’.

But that’s one of the things about amaryllises: all you need is a window and water. Water it every other day before it comes up, then every day after it does. And there you go.
